New Spin On Grandma Phone Scam Snags Florida Woman's Cash

WINTER HAVEN -- The phone scam telling people a family member is in trouble in a distant city and needs money, is well known. Usually it's someone posing as a grandson or granddaughter asking grandma to send them cash. A version is back with a new twist in Central Florida.

Winter Haven police say a woman got a phone call from an overseas claiming that her daughter was in a traffic crash and demanding information. She gave the information and the caller then told her to wire $1000 to Mexico because her daughter was being held hostage by a drug cartel. Someone was heard screaming in the background. She sent $350, only to find out that her daughter was safe in Orlando.

Police say that anyone who gets such a call should reach out to law enforcement.
