El Chapo's Wife Arrested On Drug Trafficking Charges

The wife of Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman Loera, leader of the Sinaloa Cartel, was arrested on drug trafficking chargesEmma Coronel Aispuro, 31, was taken into custody at Dulles International Airport on Monday (February 22).

Prosecutors allege that Aispuro conspired with her husband to distribute illegal drugs, including methamphetamine, cocaine, and marijuana. She was accused of relaying messages on behalf of Guzman from 2012-2014 while he was trying to avoid capture in Mexico. Prosecutors also said that she was involved in his dramatic escape from a Mexican prison in 2015.

She worked with Guzman's sons to purchase property near the prison, along with guns and an armored truck. They built a 1,600-yard underground escape tunnel, which Guzman used to break out of the jail.

When Guzman was rearrested in 2016, Aispuro allegedly began planning to break her husband out of prison for the second time. She is accused of paying a cooperating witness, who was not identified in court documents, $100,000 to purchase property near the prison. Guzman was transferred to a different prison. Aispuro attempted to have him transferred back by offering a $2 million bribe to a Mexican official, but Guzman was extradited to the United States to face charges that he was the leader of the Sinaloa Cartel.

Guzman was convicted on ten counts of engaging in a continuing criminal enterprise, drug trafficking, money laundering, and conspiracy to commit murder and sentenced to life in prison plus 30 years.
