Palm Beach County May Soon Get a New Area Code

TALLAHASSEE -- Palm Beach County is one step closer to getting a new area code.

The staff at the Public Service Commission says that area code 561, which has served the Palm Beaches since 1996, is in danger of running out of numbers. The staff is backing a plan by the agency that runs the area code system to create an overlay area code.

Commissioners will take up the issue December 7th. In the past three years, the commission has okayed new area codes for Northwest Florida, Central Florida and the Tampa area, where a new overlay code takes effect in January.

Information from the News Service of Florida was used in this report.
