TAMPA -- Hillsborough County will require landlords to give 60 days notice before raising rents. County commissioners voted 6-0 to add that provision to the county's Tenant's Bill of Rights, as well as a requirement of 30 days' notice before a non-renewal.
Commissioners had explored a 120-day notice but were told that would go beyond state law.
Chair Kimberly Overman said the goal is "to make sure we stabilize a community that's in crisis right now." Rents in the Tampa Bay area have gone up more than 30 percent in the past year.
The provisions would take effect in October, as does a similar ordinance passed Tuesday in Pinellas. Meantime, St. Petersburg City Council is expected to vote Thursday morning on whether to follow Tampa's lead and begin work on a referendum to authorize emergency rent control.
