(Wilton Manors, Fla) - The South Florida LGBTQ community is reacting to Pope Francis approving a ruling that will allow same-sex couples to receive blessings under certain conditions.

Pope Francis said, "Homosexuality is not a crime."

Tony Lima, CEO of SunServe, which provides services and care for people in need in Broward's LGBTQ+ community, says the Pope's decision to allow same sex blessings is just the beginning.

"As a gay man growing up Catholic, it is incredibly validating that the church that used to hate people like me is coming around as accepting, loving and supportive," said Lima.

The Vatican announced the landmark decision on Monday, saying priests can give the blessings if they are not given as part of regular Church rituals.

Instead, blessings can be given during visits to a shrine, a meeting with a priest or during a pilgrimage.

The Pope first opened the door to the possibility of blessings for same-sex couples back in October. The Vatican said the blessings are a sign that God welcomes all.
