Bills are ready for full Florida Senate and House consideration which would put social media platforms on notice when it comes to pictures and videos altered to make them pornographic, or "deepfakes."
“This legislation addresses the reality there’s no avenue by which an altered sexual depiction posted on an internet platform can be removed by the individual whose image was used," says Miami-Dade County Senator Alexis Calatayud, the bill's sponsor.
Her bill, which passed the Senate Rules Committee today, would require the platforms to come up with a process to remove the content within 48 hours after being notified by the victim.
Violators would be subject to penalties under the Florida Deceptive and Unfair Trade Practices Act.
The bill is named after Jacksonville's Brooke Curry, who was just 16 when a person manipulated one of her Instagram pictures and made it into a realistic nude image.
It cleared the Senate Rules Committee today and a similar bill passed the House Commerce Committee yesterday.
