An Apopka small business owner, Esvin Juarez, has been deported by ICE and his wife, Rosmeri Miranda, wears an ankle monitor and faces the same fate.
Their children, who are U.S. citizens, may be left to fend for themselves if both their parents are deported to Guatemala.
State Rep. Rita Harris said, even immigrants have the right to due process. "It's not a radical position; it's part of our democracy."
Juarez and Miranda said they missed an immigration hearing shortly after arriving in the U.S., resulting in a deportation order issued in absentia.
The family said Juarez disappeared for days and later found out he was deported to Guatemala even though he was in the process of obtaining a U visa.
The pair had missed a court hearing more than two decades ago, and a deportation order was placed on them, but it was never fulfilled.
But, over those two decades, the couple have built a life and a family in Apopka.
