Hunter Says He was Prepared To Die Or "Blow His Foot Off" When Gator Struck

A Palm Beach Gardens man is out of the hospital after a ten foot alligator chomped down on his leg in the Corbett Wildlife Refuge Saturday.

46-year James Boyce is talking about it for the first time.

He says he was deer hunting three miles away from his vehicle, and had just walked around some thick palmetto bushes when the gator grabbed him.

"All I felt was like an electrical shock. I just screamed and I look and there's this gator, right there, and he started pulling me back. And he keeps grabbing, grabbing and I'm like 'Oh my God, this is really happening'."

Boyce says when he stuck his gun into the gator's mouth, the reptile took off.

The man's wife called 911 and used a belt as a tourniquet, and another hunter nearby came to Boyce's aid as well.

Boyce says he was prepared to die and even said goodby to his wife.

By the time the Martin County Fire Rescue chopper found Boyce, he had passed out from the loss of blood.

Rescuers were able to get him to St. Mary's Medical Center in time to save his life and his leg.
