School District Makes Guidance Counselors Pay Back Bonuses

More than thirty guidance counselors with the Palm Beach County School District are having to pay back bonuses they received in error.

The $2,500 bonuses arrived in their bank accounts two weeks before Christmas and this month the counselors were sent notices that administrators misinterpreted the eligibility requirements of the state's bonus program for high-achieving public school teachers.

The district dishes out its own money for bonuses to non-classroom employees, but recently figured out that some of the counselors who received them were not eligible.

Employees claim they've already spent that money and can't afford to have their paychecks docked over several months to cover repayment.

A school district official says they have the taxpayers to answer to.
