FPL is requesting a $9 billion rate hike to customers' base rate over four years.
It would begin in 2026 and a Florida Power and Light spokesman says it's needed partly due to Florida's growing population.
FPL submitted the request to Florida's Public Service Commission on Friday and a series of meetings will be held to determine whether the hike will be approved.
The power giant has provided a calculator on their website so customers can find out how much their bills may go up.
Based on the 1200 kilowatt hours that Florida Power Services says is the average household usage per month, the projected bill adjustment is nearly $10 more per month for next year and that number would continue to increase through 2029.
