Broward School's Cellphone Ban Stays For Now

When the first school bell rings in less than two weeks in Broward County, cell phones will have to remain switched off. Broward County School Board members agree to revisit - but not until next month and again in October - an update to the district's near full ban of cell phone use.

The proposal would allow high schoolers to reconnect to the outside world during lunch time.

"I do agree that excessive use of cell phones is problematic. I also agree that use of cell phones during instructional time is also problematic. However, complete banning of the use of cell phones, in my opinion, is also problematic, " said school board member Dr. Jeff Holness.

He argues today's students need immediate communication with loved ones, quick research and stress reduction... Opponents say it takes time for kids to refocus on classwork.
