Marathon, FL - Authorities in the Florida Keys have removed a 96-foot abandoned submarine that had been deteriorating near Marathon.
The vessel, known locally as the "Yellow Submarine," had been intended as a tourist attraction by a Marathon resident but became heavily corroded over the years, creating hazards for navigation and the surrounding marine environment.
The removal took place on Monday, according to the Monroe County Board of Commissioners.
Brittany Burtner, Senior Administrator for Marine Resources, said derelict vessels of any size can threaten boater safety, the environment, and safe navigation.
“Removing this submarine protects our waterways and highlights the importance of prevention,” Burtner said.
This operation is part of a broader effort to address abandoned vessels in Florida Keys waters.
Monroe County, working with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, has removed 134 derelict vessels in the first six months of 2025.
Officials noted that crews plan to remove two additional vessels in the coming weeks, including a shrimp boat off Islamorada and a grounded boat near Bahia Honda State Park, which is visible from U.S. 1.
The county emphasized that ongoing removal efforts are essential for preserving the local marine environment, reducing navigation hazards, and maintaining safety for boaters.
The "Yellow Submarine" removal demonstrates the continued commitment to addressing derelict vessels and preventing further deterioration in Florida’s waterways.
