(Fort Lauderdale, FL) -- A homeless and housing crisis workshop is planned for Saturday, Sept. 6th at the library on Broward Boulevard starting at noon.

One of the organizers, Agustina Sklar -- architect and chair of the Affordable Housing committee at the League of Women voters -- says the vast majority of people cannot afford to live here.

"This is not a low-income crisis. The most recent data shows most renters are spending half of their income on housing." She says renters need to earn more than $100,000 a year and home buyers need to earn more than $200,000 annually to live here.

Sklar says South Florida will become a ghost town for the wealthy as "teachers, nurses, and police officers cannot afford to live here, and the fear of homelessness becomes real."

She says more the goal of the workshop is to compile a list of ideas and send the report to elected officials to put pressure on them to help with the crisis.
