(Gadsden, AL) - The woman who sued the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company leading to a new national equal pay law has died.

Family members confirm Lilly Ledbetter passed away over the weekend at the age of 86.

After a decades-long legal battle, the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act was finally signed into law by then-President Barack Obama in 2009.

It was the first bill he signed shortly after taking the oath of office.

Obama posted on X: "Lilly did what so many Americans before her have done: setting her sights high for herself and even higher for her children and grandchildren. Michelle and I are grateful for her advocacy and her friendship, and we send our love and prayers to her family and everyone who is continuing the fight that she began."
