The cloud-based learning platform, Canvas has reportedly struck a deal with ransomware attackers who hacked private information involving 9000 schools worldwide. Broward, Brevard and Orange County school districts as well as FIU and UF are among those affected.
It is not clear if the ransom was paid to the hacking group,ShinyHunters who claimed responsibility. They set a deadline of today, May 12th.
According to the parent company, Instructure, the data breach included student ID's, emails, names and messages on the Canvas platform.
Instructure's chief information security officer, Steve Proud, says data was returned and the hackers sent digital proof they destroyed any remaining copies.
Proud says the company found no evidence that passwords, dates of birth, government identification or financial information were compromised.
